Agatha (Brossart) Mattern, the daughter of John and Cecilia (Schneider) Brossart was born in the Rugby, North Dakota home of her grandmother on November 15, 1925.  She died at the age of 90 years on Monday, February 22, 2016 in her Rugby home.

Agatha was reared in the rural farm home of her parents northwest of Rugby and received her education in the Dewey Township school.  She loved to work with animals and in the fields with her Dad and brothers.  On October 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Peter Mattern in the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby.  Following their marriage, the couple purchased the Mattern Family Farm in Ness Township, where they farmed, ranched and raised their family of six children.  Agatha always helped with the field work, driving tractors, combining, whatever it took.  She had a very large garden, did a lot of canning, loved to cook and bake for family and friends loved to go camping, hunting and fishing.  After retiring from farming, Agatha worked at the Heart of America Medical Center and at the Towner State Forestry for many years.  She was a former member of St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Fulda, where she was church organist and also did double duty as church organist for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Balta for years.  Agatha currently enjoyed being a member at Little Flower and playing the organ at the masses held at the hospital.  Peter died December 5, 2011.

Survivors include two sons, David of Bismarck and James of Rugby; four daughters, Cecilia (Layton) Brown of Edna, WA, Elizabeth (Elgie) Gentry of Onalaska, WA, Patricia Kuhnhenn of Rugby and MaryAnn (Greg) Delzer of Bismarck; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ned Brossart of Grand Forks and Leo Brossart of Arizona; three sisters, Frances Volk of Towner, Cecilia Maier of Rugby and Rose Hornstien of Tioga; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband; great-grandson, Ashton Genetzky; son-in-law, Daryl Kuhnhenn; brothers, John, Bennie, Frank, Paul, Pius and Joe; one sister, Mary Ann Brossart; brothers-in-law, Pius Hornstein, William Maier and Kasmer Volk; sister-in-law, Clara Brossart; and her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 26^th at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with spring burial in the church cemetery.  Father Tom Graner, Celebrant.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday with a Rosary and vigil prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. all at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby.  There will be no reviewal at the church.
