Alice Mae Miller

Alice Mae (Springer) Miller was born in the family farm house near Wyndmere, ND to Alfred and Helen (Ripperton) Springer on Nov 29, 1923.  She died at the age of 93 years on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby, North Dakota.

Alice was next to the oldest and had 2 bothers and 2 sisters.  She grew up on the family farm and attended country school through the 8th grade.  She tells about walking or riding horse the 2 miles to grade school with her siblings.  She went to High School in Wyndmere and after graduation attended 2 years at Minot State and received a standard teaching certificate.  She then taught 5th and 6th graders in Willow City, ND for one year.  After that she worked 1 year in the ship yards in Bremerton, Washington, took one semester of college there and returned to Fargo, attending NDSU and received a BS degree in Home Economics in 1948.  While attending NDSU she met and eventually married D. Kyle “Kelly” Miller from Bantry who was also attending NDSU, majoring in Animal Science and planning to return to the family farming and ranching operation.  While at NDSU she had the honor of being named the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi and Kelly, belonging to another fraternity, AGR, would tell how he stole the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi.  Their first son, Jeff, was born in Fargo while Kelly was finishing college.  They returned to the family farm in 1951 and were blessed with 3 more sons, Steve, Scot and Brad.

Both Kelly and Alice were very involved in local and statewide organizations as well as politics.  Alice served on both the county and state Farm Bureau Boards as well as local and state Republican Women and Cattlewomen’s organizations.  She was active in the local Homemakers and Darners Clubs, the Shrine and Elks Auxiliary’s.  She was an active member of the Towner Commercial Club, PTA, Eastern Star, Lake Metigoshe Improvement Association and was an Elder in the Towner Presbyterian Church.  She ran and was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1992 and served on the Agriculture and Judiciary Committees.  In 1981 Kelly and Alice moved to Towner but they both stayed very active in both local and state organizations as well as the family business.  Alice has been a delegate to most all of the state Republican Conventions for the last 60 years including the 2014 convention.  She so enjoyed being able to attend the 2008 National Republican Convention in Minneapolis.

She is survived by her sons, Jeff (Karen Steinbrecher) Miller of Rugby, Steve (Jane McIntee) Miller of Bosie, ID, Scot (Robyn Crary) Miller of Billings, MT and Brad (Sandi Broen) of Chicago, Ill; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one sister, Toots; one brother, Bill, both from the Southern California area; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by, her husband Kelly; her parents; one brother, Jamie; one sister, Virginia; 2 infant children and 2 infant grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Towner.  Rev. Nathan Steen and Rev. Don Barsness, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 14 with a family service and sharing of memories beginning at 7 p.m., facilitated by Rev. Alice was a wonderful neighbor and friend to us.  She always stayed positive and always smiled. I treasure her memory.  Her greatest joys in life were her sons, who were there for her.   God bless her family.

To Alice's family, I am Ethel Puetz Little's daughter. Mom and I were to see Alice a few years ago and stayed at her home in Rugby. I fondly remember your folks stopping at the farm. Alice was the closest thing mom had to a sister. I have the cutest picture of mom and Alice in my office! Thank you for letting mom know of her passing. My sincerest sympathy.

Jeff and Family,
We were sorry to hear about Alice.  She did a great service to the State with all her Republican work.  There is always a smile brought on thinking about meeting her at the many functions she attended and receiving a warm greeting and visit from her.
She will be missed.
