Alma Hanbury

Alma (Greene) Hanbury, the daughter of Harrison P. and Minnie (Pratt) Greene was born on November 4, 1912 in the rural family homestead near Drake, North Dakota.  She died at the age of 100 years on Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee, Minnesota.

Alma was the fourth child of fourteen children and at the age of two the family moved to Hatton, Saskatchewan, Canada, farming there for eight years.  They returned to North Dakota in 1922 and farmed near Balta.  She received her education in Canada, Balta and Rugby.  On April 12, 1932, she was united in marriage to Gustave “Gus” Hanbury in the Methodist Church parsonage in Rugby.  Shortly after their marriage, the couple went into the restaurant business, owning and operating the Ideal Café and The Sandwich Shop.  Gus and Alma continued in the restaurant business until 1946 when they purchased a farm northeast of Rugby.  The couple farmed for twelve years and decided to go back into the restaurant business, opening and operating the Hanbury Café in Rugby, until their retirement in 1975.  Alma was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Rugby for many years where she was involved with Ladies Aid, Women’s Circle, the prayer chain, and served as a Deaconess.  She was also active in Women’s Aglow Fellowship.  In her later years, she was a member of Restoration Ministries.  Alma was an energetic volunteer at the local Food Pantry and enjoyed leading Bible studies at the Haaland Retirement Home in Rugby. She was famous for her baking and enjoyed fishing trips and family get-togethers.  Gus died May 30, 1985.  Alma continued to make Rugby her home following Gus’s death until 2003 when she moved to the Frazee Assisted Living Center to be closer to her family.

Alma is survived by her children, Sharon (Tom) Howe of Frazee, Minnesota and Susan (Ron) Mueller of Paris, Texas; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Avis Dokken of Billings, Montana; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter, Carrie Howe; two brothers, Harrison Jr. and Vernon Greene; ten sisters, Meryle Massong, Garnet Holm, Alice Miller, Gladys Johnson, Patricia Van Sweringen, Ellen Tuff, Jane Austin, Leith Voeller, Fae Jankowski and Betty in infancy; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 23rd, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Rugby with burial in the Persilla Watts Cemetery, Rugby.  Pastor Mike Pretzer, officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby and will continue for one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Monday.  There will be a time of prayer and sharing of memories at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
