Amelia (Kuntz) Schmitt

Amelia (Kuntz) Schmitt, the daughter of George and Johanna (Bohl) Kuntz was born in the farm home of her parents in Blumenfeld, McHenry County North Dakota on August 18, 1935.  She died at the age of 82 years on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the Trinity Medical Center in Minot, North Dakota.

Amelia was reared in the home of her parents in Blumenfeld and received her education in a rural school near her home.  Following her schooling she helped on the family farm and attended to her siblings.  When old enough, she did nannying for several farm neighbors.  On October 20, 1953, she was united in marriage to John B. Schmitt at St. John’s Catholic Church in Blumenfeld.  Following their marriage, the couple continued ranching in Blumenfeld until 1955, when they moved the family to Minot where John took employment with the Great Northern Railroad.  In 1961, they moved back to the home ranch where they raised their family, ranched, and had a dairy operation.  In 1992, the couple decided to retire from the ranch and moved to Rugby, North Dakota.  In 1998, they returned to a farm near the home place.  John died February 18, 1999.  A few years after his death, Amelia purchased a home in Towner where she resided until her death.

A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker.  Amelia loved to cook and bake and was well known for her buns and kuchen.  She also enjoyed membership at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner, gardening, fishing, sewing jean quilts and embroidery.

Amelia is survived by 4 daughters, Nancy (Donavan) Schneibel, Barton; Linda (Kenneth) Weber, Devils Lake; Amelia (Joe) Haman, Rugby; and Sharon (Travis) Klein, Garrison; 8 sons, James (Barbara), Bismarck; Gerald (Marie), Bismarck; Rodney (Pamela), Rugby, David (Brenda), Towner, Clemens (Jodi) Rugby, Robert (Dawn), Mandan, Randall (Stacey), Rugby & John (Tonya), Bismarck;  45 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren;  3 brothers: Nick, George and Richard; 6 sisters: Rebecca Long, Elizabeth Wentz, Magdalena Hermanson, Joan Gleason, Bernadette Wentz and Barbara Zahradka, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband; 2 sons, John Jr. and one in infancy; 5 grandchildren, Dustin, Zachary, Chad, Charity & Nathan; 4 siblings: Peter, David and Joseph Kuntz and Frances Moe, and her parents.

Mass of Christian burial held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 2nd at  St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner with burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Blumenfeld.  Father Michael Schommer, Celebrant and Father Brian Bachmeier, Concelebrant

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with a Rosary and Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m.  Visitation will continue Friday one hour prior to the time of Services at the church.
