Barbara Burckhard

Barbara Thersa (Jaeger) Burckhard, the daughter of Balzer and Juliana (Ochs) Jaeger was born in the Towner, North Dakota home of her parents on December 18, 1921.  She died peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2014, surrounded by loving family at the Sanford Health Center in Fargo, North Dakota.

Barbara was raised in the home of her parents and received her education in Towner.  With the exception of two years during World War II, when she and her sister, Katherine worked as welders in the shipyards of Seattle, Washington,  times she would recall fondly;  dancing and their purchase of fur coats.  Following the end of the war, Barbara returned to Towner.  On November 29, 1945, she was united in marriage to Anton “Tony” Burckhard at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner.  Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Towner and together, raised seven children.  A loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Barbara loved life, good times, good food and time with family and friends.  She will be remembered for her highly social nature; the bus trips to Minot to shop, her love of dancing, and her enjoyment of cooking.  Many will miss her specialties, garden vegetable soup, wedding Kuchen and homemade buns.

Barbara will be sadly missed by her children, Fr. Reverend Leonard Burckhard of Fargo, Sharon (Larry) Handegard of Laurel, Montana, Nancy Horan of Potsdam, New York, Jeffrey (Char) Burckhard of Havre, Montana, Julie (Terry) Kouba of Dubuque, Iowa and Steven (Julie) Burckhard of Missoula, Montana; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends;  She was preceded in death by her husband (June 13, 2003); a son, James Burckhard (August 24, 2013); a son-in-law, Clayton Horan; four sisters, Katherine Thompson, Stephina Kivela, Mary Kongslie and Betty Hagel; six brothers, Frank, Anton, Mike, Matt, Freddy and Pius Jaeger; and her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 4th at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner with burial in the church cemetery.  Fr. Michael Schommer, Celebrant

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m, with a rosary & vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday in the Anderson Funeral Home, Towner  Visitation will continue on Saturday for one hour prior to the time of services at the church

It is with mourning that I heard of the death of your mother Barbara. It is a consolation of our faith that she is now nearer to us, can love us and pray for us – not before a statue or with a prayer book, but in the very Beatific Vision of God and in the total communion of Saints.
Barbara was so fortunate to be surrounded with your love, your tears, your laughter and your sharing of memories. I’m sure it was a sacred time for her and you as a family. We do know that she went on to a greater love than any of us can imagine.
I am so sorry I cannot make it to the funeral. I will be on my way to Rome. Please know I will be remembering her as I celebrate the Eucharist during my time there.
Peace be with you,
Fr. Al Bitz

Dear Father Len and family of Barbara, We are adding your mom in our book of prayers request, which we remember those names in our time of prayer each day.
God Bless you all,
Deacon Sam & Kaaren Pupino

So sad to hear of the Barb's passing. I used to drive bus for the casino runs to Belcourt, and really enjoyed meeting and visiting with Barb. Many of us on the bus looked forward to seeing her and enjoying her company. She was such a delightful person. She will be missed.

We were so sorry to hear of Barbara's passing. I had such a nice visit with her this summer. I always enjoyed seeing her in Minot on her many trips to Walmart. Nancy, I will always remember your mom and her infectious laughter as we were growing up. You and your family are in our prayers.
God Bless, Geri Zainhofsky
