Beulah Grace Broe

Beulah “Grace” (Smith) Broe, the daughter of Victor and Esther (Toso) Smith was born on July 21, 1933 in rural Benson County, North Dakota.  She died at the age of 83 years on Saturday evening, March 25, 2017 at the St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey, North Dakota.

Beulah was reared in the rural home of her parents and attended country school near her home.  She completed her education,  graduating from Benson County Aggie School in Maddock.  After graduation, she went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. as a long-distance operator in Devils Lake.  Later, she expanded her career fields over the years serving as a secretary for Farmers Union Insurance, managed the Rugby Credit Union, and clerked for Earl’s Red Owl and the Pamida Store, all in Rugby.  She finally said enough was enough and allowed herself to retire.  Beulah was member of First Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Rugby Eagles Auxiliary of which she was a past President and Treasurer, a North Dakota State Eagles Trustee and greatly enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sport activities, gardening, bowling, football Sundays, college basketball and the Minnesota Twins.  She was one of Rugby’s best bakers.  In December of 2014, Beulah moved to the Maddock Memorial Home to recover from heart surgery and later diagnosed with colon cancer and surgery, she decided to stay put.  In February of 2017 she moved to the St. Aloisius Care Center in Harvey, again for cancer care.

She is survived by her children, one daughter, Vicki (Scott) Foss of Maddock; four sons, Keith (Colleen) of Bottineau, Wes (Kathy), David and Dale (MaryAnn), all of Rugby; grandchildren, Courtney, Ashley, Taylor & Shawn Foss; Aimee & Clay Erdman; Will Broe & Jackie Hunt; Collette Broe; Kevin & Andrea Broe; Kris Broe; Duane & Emma Broe; and Lexi Broe; great-grandchildren, Lily & Netta Erdman, Alexis (Broe) Hunt, Kaleb Broe & Emmitt Broe; other relatives and many friends.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Broe; sister and brother-in-law, Veloy & Clifford Vallier; and her parents.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 30th at First Lutheran Church, Rugby with private spring burial.  Pastor Elaine Sveet, officiate.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service and sharing of memories at 7 p.m. in the Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby.

Our deepest sympathies to each of you. Beulah was a special lady and it was fun to see her in action. She truly  had a joy for living life to the fullest. It was always fun to hear her and my mother-in-law, Joyce, share stories from their years as Aggie classmates. I bet the stories, laughter, and good times are being share  again in heaven.
Our blessings as you grieve the loss of a wonderful lady.
