Carl Schaan, age 92 of Minot and formerly of Balta and Rugby, North Dakota died Friday, February 7^th, 2014 at the Trinity Homes of Minot.

Carl was born January 9^th, 1922 in the rural Balta, North Dakota home of his parents, Valentine and Rosa (Schiele) Schaan, where he was reared and received his education.  At an early age, he learned to handle a team of horses by himself and was always proud of that time.  Following his schooling, Carl worked and farmed with his Dad.  On June 3^rd 1944, he was united in marriage to Lois Monger and the couple made their home, farmed and reared their children on their farm near Balta.  He greatly enjoyed the fieldwork, making hay, tending the cattle and took great pride in keeping the machinery in excellent repair, the crops and tack.  Although Carl and Lois left the farm in August of 1981 and moved to Rugby, he continued to farm many more years.  In March of 2011, the couple moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Minot.

He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #4136, the John F. Kennedy #0786 Assembly of the 4^th Degree, the Harvey and Rugby Eagles Aeries’, the Balta Wildlife Club and was active in the communities he lived in.    While living in the Balta area, the couple were members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.  Carl loved to play cards, enjoyed dancing for as long as he could, wintered in Arizona for many years and travel and sightseeing with Lois.

Carl is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Lois; two sons, Richard (Cindy) of Rugby and Wayne (Ellie) of Minot; three daughters, Carol Anderson of Minot, Ruth (Wayne) Thiel of Rugby and Cindy (Mike) Rubin of Rochester, Minnesota; 19 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; four sisters, Martha (Daryl) Schlichenmayer of LasVegas, Nevada, Christine Bertsch and Helen Klein, both of Fargo and Bernie (John) Duchscher of Rugby; sister-in-law, Lugard Schaan of LasVegas, Nevada; brothers-in-law, Edward Senger of Harvey and Alan Morrisey of Phoenix, Arizona; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by one son, James; two grandsons; twin great granddaughters; a son-in-law, Curt Anderson; four brothers, Phillip, Frank, Leo and John; two sisters, Julia Senger and Dorothy Morrisey; and his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial  will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11^th at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with spring burial in the church cemetery.  Fr. Tom Graner, Celebrant and Msgr. Fr. Joseph Senger, Concelebrant.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby.  There will be no Reviewal in the church.

Rosary and Vigil Prayers will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home.
