Carol Houim

Carol Frances Houim, the daughter of Virgil and Frances (Kraft) Houim was born December 31, 1969 in Rugby, North Dakota.  She died at the age of 46 on June 2, 2016 at the Altru Medical Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Carol grew up with the love of her parents and siblings and became deaf at a very early age and received her education through High School graduation at the School for the Deaf in Devils Lake.  Following graduation, she worked briefly in the dietary department of the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.  She then attended a college in Minneapolis which focused on studies for the hearing impaired.  After completing her studies, she made her home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota in the 1990’s where she took employment with a local air base in their shipping department.  Carol later moved to Missouri and worked at the Fort Leonard Hood Army Base there.  The last several years, she has lived in Grand Forks and was employed by a local Hotel.

Carol was a very brave, independent and determined woman who was not afraid to rent a U-Haul, pack and hitch it up and move to a new home and place of employment, always with her cats beside her.  She enjoyed walking, swimming, rummage sales and playing volleyball.  A favorite family past-time was playing pinochle & wolf with her siblings.  Watching basketball and football where favorites too, and would often text “play-by-play” to her brothers.  She cheered on the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos.  Carol was a very warm and loving person, with a heartwarming smile.

Survivors include her brothers and sisters, Garry (Lana) of Mandan, Don (Judy) of Grandin, Darlene (Gary) Rose of Rugby, Bob (Monica) of Rugby, Bill (Brenda) of Minot, Ken (Kathy) of Rugby and Karen (Stacey) Koster of Mayville; a sister-in-law, Nancy Houim of Rugby; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and her cat “Blake”.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David; and three nieces, Kimberly Rose, Abby and Ashley Houim

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 9th at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with burial in the church cemetery, Father Tom Graner, celebrant.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby with a rosary and vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Posted Condolences:

I'm so sorry to hear of Carol's passing.  I was one of her teachers at NDSD and enjoyed having her in class.  She had a good sense of humor and wit and SO loved her family.  Always talked about them when she came back from the weekend.  Bless her heart.  My thoughts are with her loved ones at this time.

So very sorry to hear that Carol passed away.  I was a dorm counselor at NDSD when Carol went to school.  She was such a sweet gal!  She was always thoughtful of others!  My thoughts and prayers are with her whole family!

To Houim family: my condolences to the family. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you, including Carol. She was very sweet lady who I had privileges of knowing and grown to love her sweet nature, sharing the love of cat stories while attending NDSD. May she rest in peace with Our Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven!
