Charity Ann Schmitt

Charity Ann Schmitt, the daughter of Rodney and Pamela (Weigel) Schmitt was born on July 28, 1983 in Minot, North Dakota.  She died at the age of 30 years on Monday, March 24, 2014 at Sanford Health in Bismarck, North Dakota awaiting a heart transplant.

Charity was raised in the rural Orrin, North Dakota home of her parents with her older sister, Mandy; little sister, Tracy and little brother Cody.  While in high school she worked at the Rugby Library and The Growing Place until she graduated from Rugby High School in 2002.  She completed her education at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, studying Early Childhood Development and Education, while there she worked at Heartland Childcare.  At the time of her death, Charity had moved to Good Thunder, Minnesota and was training to be a client service representative for the House of Hope in Mankato, Minnesota, while waiting to be called for a much needed heart transplant.  Prior to her move to Good Thunder in January, she had made her home in Harvey, North Dakota.  She enjoyed children and the physically challenged, Special Olympics, FFA, and swing choir.  While living in Harvey she had worked for several businesses including, Hav-It, Hornbacher Cafe, Eagles Club, the Pondo Bar, Artos, and The Right Place in Harvey.  She was proud of her “John Deere Green” trailer house and loved spending time with her nieces and nephews.  Her smile and dimples would light up any room and her energy in her fight to live was overwhelming.  Charity taught us all to live one day at a time and her favorite saying was…’Life is not a matter of counting years; it’s a matter of making years count’.

Charity is survived by her parents, Rodney and Pamela of rural Orrin; her best friend and companion, John ‘Doc’ Bailey of Harvey; sisters, Mandy (Shane) Peterson of Lincoln, ND, and Tracy Schmitt (Scott Manning) of Fort Pierre, SD; a brother, Cody Schmitt of Orrin, ND; nieces, Taila (9), Alyssa (6), Sidney (3), Kaylie (3), Tessa (3) and Kinley (1) and nephew Tyson (7); maternal grandmother, Rose Weigel of Rugby; paternal grandmother, Amelia Schmitt of Towner; several aunts, uncles; other relative and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Emil Weigel; paternal grandfather, John B. Schmitt; nephew, Preston Peterson; aunt, Julie Murray; other relatives.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Harvey with spring burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Orrin.   Father Brian Bachmeier, Celebrant.

Visitation:  from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Balta.

Vigil prayers and sharing of memories will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Balta church.

What a beautiful photo of God's angel. Her smile, twinkling eyes, and dimples enhanced the beauty in her heart. All that is missing from the photo is her laughter. When Charity laughed she brightened the room and had everyone laughing with her. Even though the tears are flowing remember to smile for all the joy and love she spread in her too few years on earth. We know that God's kingdom is rocking with her laughter.

I had not known Charity long, we just met a couple weeks ago when I interviewed her for her job at House of Hope. In that short time she did manage to touch my heart with her incredibly positive attitude, her big dimples, and her wonderful personality. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. She talked about you with great love.

While I never met Charity, my husband and I were so excited when Tracy told us that Charity was on the transplant list. We are saddened to hear that she did not receive a heart. My husband is a heart transplant recipient. He received his heart 8 years ago this April. We are thankful to the donor family every day. Our thoughts and prayers have been with you during this journey and will remain with you in the days to come. May the Lord hold Charity's family in the palm of his hand during the days and years to come.
