Curtis L. Broe

Curtis L. Broe, the son of Palmer and Iverne (Fragodt) Broe was born on September 19, 1957 in Rugby, North Dakota.  He died at the age of 58 years on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Trinity Medical Center in Minot, North Dakota.

Curt was raised in the Sherwood area and graduated high school there, the class of 1976.  The day after graduation he started working in the oil fields.  He also worked for Berstrom Construction and as an iron worker 793 on the MSU Dome in Minot.  He decided to further his education and attended Wahpeton School of Science for one year, then he moved back to Minot to finish his education at Minot State University.  After graduating, he went to work for North Western Mutual Life Insurance as a Life Insurance Agent.  In his entrepreneur spirit, Curt branched out on his own and started his own company, “Independent Insurance Agency”.  Later, he sold the agency to McHenry Insurance Agency of Towner and stayed with them as their agent.  Curt also became a Real Estate Agent in 1995 and sold real estate under McClintock Agency out of Rugby.

At work, he was known to the patron’s children as the “Candyman” as his special drawer was always full candy and the kids always seemed to hightail it to him; he always made time to make each child feel very special.  Curt, forever made time for his co-workers in times of need, whether their car wouldn’t start in sub-zero temperatures or they just needed the ear of a friend to listen.  Curt would have them laughing before long with his huge contagious laugh!  He had a real love for life, family and friends; never forgot to send birthday and Christmas cards, made simple phone calls that would brighten someone’s day, or stopping on the street to visit young and elderly alike.  He would just be that friend that someone needed, he did so many kind acts.

Curt met that special someone, Mary Holen in 1977 while she was working in Sherwood doing Road Construction.  They were together 39 years and made their home in Towner, North Dakota.  Curt loved to feed the birds, watched his bird feeders and would sit and tell Mary what each bird was.  His yard was full of beautiful flowers and trees.  He loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, boating and taking one of his favorite dogs, Duke, hunting.  He enjoyed sitting by the campfire with family and friends to relax, enjoyed listening to rock and roll music and watching Nascar in his favorite chair.  He loved his dogs, Duke and Rusty, his cats Fred, Zeb and at home cat Smedley.  Curt served on the Towner Ambulance and Fire Department, George Lake Foundation and was a member of the Rugby Eagles and served as President from 1994 to 1995.

Curt is survived by his partner in life, Mary Holen of Towner; sisters, JoAnn (Jim) Bruder and Marilyn (Bruce) Gilseth, all of Mohall and Carol Adermann of Fargo; a brother, Paul Broe of Fargo; numerous nieces, nephews; other relatives and many many friends.  He was preceded in death by a nephew, Jimmy Broder; brother-in-law, Everett Blowers and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 27th at Zion Lutheran Church in Towner with burial at a later date at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner.  Wally Fretland and Pastor Linda Wimmer, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Towner and will continue for one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Saturday.

A prayer service and sharing of memories will begin at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mary,
Nathan and I are very sad to learn of your loss. It's been a few years since we've seen you both but will always remember him because he was the kind of a person that always left a very positive impression probably on everyone he met.
Your friends, Nathan and Marilyn Henke

It has been many years since I have seen the Broe kids and you probably do not remember me.  I was married to your uncle, Ervin Fragodt.  Curtis was only three years old at that time.  My heart and prayers go out to you in sympathy and love.
God bless. Joyce
