Edith Lorraine (Brown) Slaubaugh, the daughter of Clyde and Iva (Doremire) Brown, was born in the rural Pierce County, North Dakota home of her parents on March 15, 1918.  She died in the loving care of family on Friday, November 4, 2016 at the age of 98 years in her Wolford, North Dakota home.

Edith lived in Pierce County most of her life.  During her senior year of high school, she lived with her aunt and uncle, Maude and Hugh Brown in Alexandria, Minnesota where she graduated.  On October 19, 1937, Edith was united in marriage to Albert Job Slaubaugh in the home of his parents near Wolford.  Following their marriage, the couple moved to Indiana where they lived several years before returning to farm north of Wolford and to raise their family of 12 children.  Albert “Bert” died suddenly at the age of 53 on September 25, 1969.  Edith stayed on the farm a few years before moving into the town of Wolford where she remained until her death on Friday.

Edith belonged to Lakeview Mennonite Church in rural Wolford during her adult life and participated in the women’s sewing circle.  She wove rugs on her loom, sewed numerous quilts which won many awards at the State Fair, and donated quilts and rugs to the Upper Midwest Relief Sale.  Edith enjoyed crocheting and made hundreds of pot holders, dish cloths and rugs; put together scores of puzzles and became an avid reader in her later years.  She loved to fish and hunt.  Her dad had taught her to shoot as a young girl, and she was very accurate with a firearm.  One fall she credited herself with shooting all six deer in the hunting party. Party members confirmed the story.

A loving farm wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Edith enjoyed the challenges of farming and raising 12 children and was a gracious and generous hostess to many.  She took in a young man from Costa Rica, Roberto Lopez, “her adopted son” and taught him English and sent him to flight school.  Other enjoyments besides the company of family and friends were bird watching, “feeding” the deer and squirrels in the winter and sitting on her deck in the summer enjoying her flower beds.

Those privileged to share in her life were her children, Edward (Marilyn Maust), Wolford; Lois (Gary) Jenson, Milnor; Maynard (Joyce Byler), Cassopolis, MI; Lola (Warren) Slagell, Thomas, OK; Lily (Raymond) Gingerich, Mylo; Lila (Robert) Fisher, Faith, SD; Leona (Nile) Yoder, Belcourt; Floyd (Barb Hochstetler), Wolford; and Bert (Sarah Yoder), Greenwood, DE; daughters-in-law, Vicki (Owens) Slaubaugh, New Paris, IN and Lynette (Grieser) Slaubaugh, Harrisonburg, VA; 41 grandchildren; 108 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Greig, Corvallis, OR; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Silas) Shrock, Shipshewana, IN; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, Donald, Richard and Howard; sisters, Eleanore Moore, Hester Deplazes and Virginia TenEyck; daughter-in-law, Karen (Troyer) Slaubaugh; five grand, great, and great -great grandchildren; and her parents.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 12^th at the Lakeview Mennonite Church in rural Wolford with burial in the church cemetery.  Pastor Fred Kanagy, officiate.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday with a time of sharing memories and scripture beginning at 7:30 all in the Lakeview Church.
