Esther Lorraine (Grorud) McClintock, the daughter of Bredo and Nellie (Dokken) Grorud was born on February 16, 1924 in Rugby, North Dakota.  She died at the age of 91 years on Sunday, November 8, 2015  in Rugby, after, in her own words, a very happy life.

Esther was raised in the home of her parents in Rugby where she attended school and graduated from Rugby High School. She attended the University of North Dakota. While there, she worked in the business office, was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority and was drum majorette for the UND marching band.  She was an avid sports fan and player.  She was runner-up in the state tennis tournament, won the women’s city golf tournament several times and was a life guard at the city pool for several years.  She worked for a while at Neiman Marcus in Dallas and at several places in Rugby until Jay returned from the service.  On June 5, 1949 she was united in marriage to Jay McClintock in Rugby.  They became proud parents of Jay Jr., Patricia and Tom.  Their family traveled a lot, both here and in Europe and Scandinavia.  They also spent lots of happy times at their cottage on Lake Metigoshe, their cottage being one of the original ‘cabins’ on the lake. 

Esther served two terms on the Rugby Park Board, was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, served on the First Lutheran Church Council, and many years as an active member of the church ladies work group and as a quilter.  She served the church well and often over the years.  The quilting group was very important to her.  She was also an avid bridge player and a mouth-watering cook.  She was widely known as a big Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and North Dakota Fighting Sioux fan.  She attended and watched almost every game these teams played.  One of her most endearing qualities to many was her sharp and quick sense of humor which elicited chuckles and downright belly laughs out of all.  She will be greatly missed by so many.  Jay and Esther were happily married for 61 years.  Jay died on August 25, 2010.

Esther is survived by her children, Jay McClintock Jr. of Rugby, Patricia (Mike) Baier of Bottineau and Tom McClintock of Rugby; five grandchildren, Sara Switzer, Anne (King) Sedore, Marla (Steve) Bannon, Laura Baier and Jacob McClintock; great grandchildren, Jameson Switzer, Adelaide, Greta, Archer and Fletcher Sedore; great grandchild to be baby Bannon; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Bob Grorud; sister, Betty Jacobson; and her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the First Lutheran Church in Rugby with private family burial in the Persilla Watts Cemetery, Rugby.  Pastor Mike Pretzer and Pastor Sharon Baker, officiating.
