Gladys Alda Giedd

Gladys Alda (Morrill) Giedd of Rugby was born on April 23, 1924, in Valor, Saskatchewan, Canada to Ralph and Fern (Wylie) Morrill.  Gladys died at the age of 88 years on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, North Dakota.

The Morrill family moved to North Dakota in 1929.  They lived in Crary, Minnewaukan, Harlow and Fillmore.  Gladys attended high school in Fillmore and Maddock.  Gladys followed her high school sweetheart, Loren E. Thompson to Oakland, California where they both worked in the shipyards.  After Loren enlisted in the Army Air Corps, they married on July 11, 1943 in Amarillo, Texas.  While Loren was stationed in England in WWII, Gladys returned home to Fillmore to stay with her parents.

At the end of the war, Loren returned to Gladys and civilian life in North Dakota.  They lived in Fillmore, Sutton, Anselm and Minot having a child in each place.  Loren returned to military service allowing their growing family to live in New Jersey, Louisiana, and Puerto Rico.  Gladys enjoyed traveling and experiencing life in different places.  The Thompson family was stationed in Oklahoma when a tragic military plane crash took Loren from them in1954.  Gladys moved her family back to North Dakota, staying in Fillmore for 1 year before purchasing a home in nearby Rugby.

On Aug 3, 1966, Gladys Thompson married Roy S. Giedd from Knox, ND.  Gladys and Roy enjoyed many years together.  They enjoyed gardening, fishing and traveling, along with auction sales, flea markets and were able to travel the country from coast to coast.  Later they moved to Knox where they spent many years. Gladys loved people, especially her family and friends. She was a reader and an avid letter writer and kept in close contact, by her correspondence.   Gladys and Roy returned to Rugby before Roy’s death in 1996.  Gladys remained in Rugby and resided at the Haaland Home for the last 3 years.  Her family sincerely appreciates the excellent and loving care that she received there.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Mildred (Hoffert), Lois (Peterson), Doris Morrill; brother, Samuel Morrill; husbands, Loren Thompson and Roy Giedd; son Terry Thompson; and grandson Jeffrey Thompson.  She is survived by her sister Bessie (Eberle), children: Gary Duane (Lisa) of MO, Ralph (Char) of MN, Judy (Ron Larsen) of MN, John (Kathy Rogers) of MT, Jerry (Kris) of MN, Mike (Joanna) of MI, 19 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and many beloved nieces and nephews.  Grandma G had a gift and uncanny ability to make each member of her family feel loved and special.  Her love will be shared and never forgotten.

Per Gladys’ request, a gravesite service and celebration of life gathering will follow in the spring at Knox Lutheran Cemetery.

Posted Condolences:

To Glady's Family,
Please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences in the loss of your mother. She was a lovely lady and such a good "visitor". She was always upbeat and interested in what was going on.
We had the bar in Knox for years and she and Roy would stop in often just to visit. It was always fun when some of her sisters were there as it seemed they all looked alike and we had such fun with that.
Please let all those "good" memories, prayer and time heal your hearts. You can be assured that all at Knox thought highly of your mom.
Love and Prayers, Pat Robbins and family
