Gladys Elizabeth Sveund

Gladys Elizabeth (Korsmoe) Sveund, the daughter of Gunerius G. and Lily (Perkins) Korsmoe was born on August 3, 1923 at their rural home seven miles northwest of Towner.  She died at the age of 91 years on September 29, 2014 at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby.

Gladys was raised in the rural home of her parents and was the 9th one of 10 girls.  She attended country school in rural Towner.  On June 10, 1940, she was united in marriage to Oliver “Stub” Sveund in Towner.  The couple had seven children that they raised at their family farm 5 ½ miles northwest of Towner.  Oliver often worked off the farm.  Gladys milked cows from age 6 to age 77 when she retired.  She taught all of their children to do chores and help others.  She always said, ‘hard work never hurt anyone’.  She was an avid horseback rider.  Her favorite horse was ‘Old Fly’ that all of her children learned to ride on.  She drove the teams of horses as well.  She would tell stories of hauling the cream to town and coming home in the storms.  Gladys was a wonderful cook and baker, some of the family favorites were her glorified rice, homemade soups, brownies, carmel rolls and cakes.  Her great pride was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved having them come to her house to eat, play and stay overnight and they could bring their friends as well.  She always welcomed everyone to come have a cup of coffee and a snack to eat.  Gladys had a great love for animals all of her life and passed that on to her children.

Gladys is survived by her children, Clovis Lee, Judy Pond, Harvey (Marilyn) Sveund, Allan Sveund, Sharon Drader, Delilah (Carter) McBeth, Donald (Kati) Sveund; a sister who was very close to her, Margaret Vermedal; 20 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Oliver; sisters, Cora Korsmoe, Alice Heinrich, Elsie Sjong, Dorothy Parness, Florence Hendrickson, Marion Ruckle, Agnes Kongslie and Doris Jaeger; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Towner with burial in the Union Cemetery, Towner.  Pastor Linda Wimmer and Mr. Wally Fretland, officiating.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Towner and will continue on Friday for one hour prior to the time of services at the church.
