James Allen Burckhard

James Allen Burckhard

July 22, 1959 - August 24, 2013

James Allen Burckhard, age 54 of Fleming Island, Florida, died Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the West Jefferson Health Care Nursing Home in New Orleans, Louisiana.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday October 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Towner ND. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

James was born in Rugby, North Dakota and grew up in Towner, North Dakota, the sixth child of seven to Anton and Barbara (Jaeger) Burckhard. Following his high school graduation in 1977, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Jacksonville FL, where he served for four years. Following his service James remained in Florida and worked for Hite Business Machines. In 1986 James started his own business, Clay County Copier Service, which he then ran for twenty-seven years.

James had fun spending time on the beach with his chocolate lab Jeb, who he thought was the smartest dog ever. He was an avid Jacksonville Jaguar fan and found joy in preparing food and sharing it with friends at tailgate parties. He learned to cookwell and had mastered traditional German recipes with help from Mom and shared many he enjoyed with family and friends. James also enjoyed traveling, fishing with his brothers and spending time with family and friends.

James will be sadly missed by his mother Barbara Burckhard of Towner, North Dakota; and siblings Fr. Leonard Burckhard of Fargo, North Dakota; Sharon Burckhard Handegard and husband Larry of Laurel, Montana; Nancy Burckhard Horan of Potsdam, New York; Jeffrey Burckhard and wife Char of Havre, Montana; Julie Burckhard Kouba and husband Terry of Dubuque, Iowa; Steven Burckhard and wife Julie of Missoula, Montana; nine nieces and nephews, two great nephews and many friends.

James was preceded in death by his father Anton Burckhard, brother-in-law Clayton Horan and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Posted Condolences:

Aunt Barbara and family,
I just want to say how sorry I am for your loss. I cannot begin to tell you what a great cousin James was and how blessed I feel to have had him in my life for the past 20+ yrs. The first week I was here in Florida, he came over and it was like we had known each other forever. (even though I think we had not seen each other since before we moved down to Alabama). We always loved him coming to family get togethers or even just stopping by to hang out and catch up. He was always so happy and always a pleasure to be around. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love you all, Lori Burckhard Wofford

I was so sorry to hear about James' passing. My thought and prayers are with your family during these trying times. James will always be remembered by me as one of our funniest and most personable high school classmates.

Burckhard Family,
I heard about Jim's death about a year ago from my brother in-law, Clem Hager.  I couldn't believe it, and felt so badly that I was not at his funeral. Now nearly three years have passed and I stumbled on this site and had to write. Jim, I never called him Turk, was a very good friend. We were never close in terms of spending lots of time together, but we spent some real quality time in our last two years of high school talking about many things, especially the last hour of the school day in our senior year.  I cannot tell you how much he meant to me.  I am most sorry that I can't tell him.  My deepest condolences to all of you. I am so sorry.
