Kenneth Eugene Axtman

Kenneth Eugene Axtman passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at his home near Baker, ND from natural causes. He was born to Jacob and Rose (Grad) on March 11, 1938 in Twin Lake Township, Rural Knox, ND.  He was raised in Broe Township and graduated from Fillmore High School in 1956. Kenneth married Vickie (Grossman) on July 3, 1961 in Esmond, North Dakota. Over their last 54 years together, they raised their five sons on their second generation farm in Benson County.

Kenneth worked at Blesener Automobile for a period of time in Minot. He also worked for Nodak Mutual as a crop adjuster in the 90’s.  Throughout his life, he was first and foremost a farmer and rancher. Kenneth took great pride in working with his son, Terry, in the farming and cattle operation until Terry’s passing in 2008.  He also took pleasure in using his creative welding ability to provide projects around the community building unique cemetery gates.

Over the years, he was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church; the Esmond School Board, serving as President; the Broe Township Board for 34 years, also serving as Chair; the Benson County Farmer’s Union Board; and the Forth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Kenneth enjoyed spending time with his family and two pets – Dottie and Freddy.   Kenneth was a kind and gentle man who will be missed by many for his many acts of kindness and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry; and sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Larry & Sheila Kokkeler.

Kenneth is survived by his wife Vickie; sons, Steve (Janet) Axtman,  Charlotte, NC; Kenny (Deneen), Fargo, ND; Tim Axtman, Minot, ND; and Kevin Axtman, Esmond, ND. Grandchildren include the following: Tanner, Astrid, Linnea, Taiton, Elsa, Alex and Brady Axtman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond with burial in the church cemetery.  Father Brian Bachmeier, Celebrant.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the church and will continue for one hour prior to the time of services on Saturday.
