Lawrence Benson

Lawrence Alexander Benson, the son of Carl and Signe (Mattson) Benson was born on October 5, 1922 in Rugby, North Dakota.  He died at the age of 94 years on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at his home in Rugby, North Dakota.

Lawrence was raised in the Silva, North Dakota home of his parents and graduated from High School there, the class of 1940.  Following school, he farmed with his father until 1947 when he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to continue his education at a technical college there.  While doing his studies, Lawrence worked at the Norris Creamery & Manufacturing Company.  After earning his certification in Telegraphy, he went to work as a depot agent.  In 1950, he was united in marriage to Fern Silver and the couple returned to North Dakota, where they purchased a farm south of Fillmore, North Dakota.  The couple lived and farmed in Silva until 1978 when they moved to Rugby.  Lawrence continued to farm the land until retiring in 1992.  He was a former member of Fillmore Lutheran Church and a current member of First Lutheran, Rugby.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Fern; one sister, Violet (Tal) Rice of Phoenix, Arizona; one brother Ken (Jean) of Moorhead, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Arlene Benson; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by one brother Bernard; and his parents.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5th in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, Rugby with burial in the Persilla Watts Cemetery, Rugby.  Reverend Mike Pretzer, presider.

Friends may greet the family for one hour prior to the time of services at the funeral home.
