Lois M. Schaan

Lois Schaan, the daughter of Morris and Agnes (Crandall) Monger was born on August 7, 1920 in Rugby, North Dakota.  She died at the age of 99 on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby, North Dakota.

Lois was raised in Rugby and attended grade school and high school in Rugby, graduating in the class of 1938.  She went on to business college in Fargo and returned to Rugby.  Lois worked as the bookkeeper at J.C. Penny’s and later for the county welfare board.  As a young lady she went to public dances and loved to dance, something she continued to do for many years.  At one of these dances, she met Carl Schaan.  On June 3, 1944, she was united in marriage to Carl Schaan.  They spent their life on a farm by Balta, where they raised their six children.  Lois learned to be a great help on the farm, driving grain trucks, combining and milking cows.  She loved her garden, yard and flowers in the summertime.  Lois was a wonderful cook and baker; her pies were the best.  One of her family’s favorites was her lefse.  That was part of holidays, eating Grandma’s special treats.  An amazing thing about her was that she was into physical fitness as a younger person, she exercised every day, which she was still doing at the care center.  Carl and Lois left the farm and moved to Rugby the fall of 1981.  She worked part time at the Senior Citizens Center with the meals program.  She also enjoyed playing cards with friends.  She and Carl began to spend winters in Arizona, enjoying the warmer weather.  The couple moved to Minot in 2011.  Carl died February 2014 and Lois moved back to Rugby November 2017.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandma, her family was blessed to have her in their lives.  We all will miss you.

Lois is survived by three daughters, Carol Anderson of Minot, Ruth (Wayne) Thiel of Rugby and Cindy (Mike) Rubin of Birchwood, WI; one son, Wayne (Ellie) Schaan of Minot; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Schaan of Rugby; 11 grandsons, 8 granddaughters; 37 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pat Monger, Lugard Schaan, Christine Bertsch and Bernie (John) Duchscher; several nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; sons, Richard and James; son-in-law, Curt Anderson; brothers, Richard and Donald; sister, Doris; two grandsons; twin great granddaughters and her parents.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with burial in the church cemetery.  Father Franklin Miller, Celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service and sharing of memories beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby.  Visitation will continue Thursday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.  There will be no reviewal at the church.
