Loretta Rosalyn (Young) Kirchofner, the daughter of Anton “Tony” and Caroline (Abel) Young was born in the Balta, North Dakota, home of her parents on September 10th, 1940.  She died at the age of 73 years on Saturday, June 14th, 2014 in her Rugby, North Dakota home following a 28 plus years, ongoing battle against cancer.

Loretta was raised in the homes of her parents starting in Balta, then moving with family to Detroit, Michigan at age 2, returning to Balta at age 6 where she began her schooling.  The family then moved to Rugby where she continued her education at Little Flower Catholic School and graduated from Rugby High School, the class of 1958.  While attending high school, she excelled in business, bookkeeping and accounting classes and participated in a work study internship with the Rugby Insurance Agency.  On October 20th, 1959, she was united in marriage to Roy Kirchofner at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby and the couple made their home in Rugby.  A loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Loretta also worked outside the home.  Over the years, she worked at Rugby Insurance Agency/Center Mutual, Pierce Implement, branch manager of Metropolitan Federal Savings & Loan, Farmers Union Insurance Agency, McGuire’s Auto and retired due to health concerns from the Pierce County Tax Assessor’s office.

Loretta was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers, the Rugby Court of Catholic Daughters and the Rugby Eagles Auxiliary.  She enjoyed garage and estate sales, antiques, various collectables, flower & vegetable gardening, sewing, cooking and was an avid reader.  For peace of mind, she enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino.

She is survived by her husband Roy; one daughter, Cindy (Russ) Steier of Rugby; one grandson, Russell (Julie) Steier II of Rugby; one brother, James (Gail) Young of Edmonds, Washington; nieces, nephews, many in-laws; other relatives and friends.  Loretta was preceded in death by one son, Mark (November 27th, 2002); and her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 20th at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with burial in the church cemetery.  Fr. Tom Graner, Celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5 -7 p.m. Thursday with a rosary and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. and will continue on Friday from 9 – 10:30 a.m., all in the Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby.  There will be no reviewal in the church.

Roy, Cindy, Russell and Rusty, there are never the right words to say in moments like this but Loretta was a very thoughtful and heartfelt aunt. She was kind to everyone. I have never known anyone who has fought as hard as she did battling cancer. She never let it get the best of her. She will always be a hero in my heart. I wish I could be there for the funeral to pay my last respects but please know I am thinking of all of you during this saddened time. Remember the good times, it eases the pain. She will never be forgotten.
