Marie Annette Haugen

Marie Annette Haugen, the daughter of Calmer and Mildred (Tolsby) Krefting was born on March 14, 1938 in Rugby, North Dakota.  She died at the age of 75 years on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby.

Marie was raised in Pierce County and attended Dewey School #2 and graduated from Barton High School in 1957.  After completing her education she worked at the Good Samaritan Hospital as a nurse’s aide in Rugby until she married.  On April 8, 1961, she was united in marriage to Orris M. Haugen at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby.  She was an active member in the former Berwick Lutheran Church and the pianist for Sunday services, as well as the pianist for the former Marker Lutheran Church.  She worked in several cafes, C & J Auction Service and answered phones for the Anderson Funeral Home for 18 years.  In the fall of 1999, Marie entered the Heart of America Long Term Care Center in Rugby and in 2001 she moved to the Trinity Nursing Home in Minot for two years before moving back to Rugby.  At a very young age, Marie developed a strong faith in God.  Through her faith, she demonstrated to all, love, compassion, and a listening ear.  She touched the lives of many people.  Marie strongly believed in the power of prayer and would ask us to go to the Lord in prayer.

Marie is survived by her children, Michelle (Al) Gangl of Devils Lake, David Haugen of Portal, ND; Sheri (Richard) Hoffart of Bismarck, and O. Russell (Mindy) Haugen of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Matthew (Sharlene) Olson of Devils Lake, Mitchell Olson (fiancé, Jessica Davis) of Fort Collins, CO, Matthew (Amy) Haugen of Williston, ND, Caliann Haugen-Nordloef of Kenmare, ND, Jacob Haugen of Jamestown, Cody Gangl of Mandan, and Megan Gangl of Devils Lake; great granddaughters, Adley Olson, Quinn Haugen and Elli Gangl; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Orris; a daughter and son-in-law, Kari and Steven Williams; an infant granddaughter, Miranda Olson; a brother, Waldo Krefting; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby with burial in the Persilla Watts Cemetery.  Pastor Dana Holter, Officiating.

Friends may greet the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby with a prayer service and sharing of memories beginning at 7 p.m.

I knew Marie as one of Mom's Krefting cousins. It was a joy in the last few years to visit Marie at the Care Center any time we were visiting in North Dakota and to correspond with her by mail. She never missed my birthday! She was a precious woman, so joyous and loving, and she will be missed.

Marie was truly the most kind, gentle, peaceful person, with a great sense of humor and joy in life, and it was always clear how deeply she loved and cared about her family and many friends. We will all miss her so much, and be forever grateful for her presence in our lives. My thoughts are with her and all of her family.

I would like to extend my condolences to the Michelle, David, Sheri and Russ. I would like to thank you for sharing your mother with me and my family all these years. Aunt Marie was my Godmother and she was a beacon of light and my inspiration. More than a Godmother she was a Godly Mother, taking time to teach, nurture, and if necessary discipline. I always referred to Marie as my Aunt even though she was not my aunt she was my cousin. Mari Haugen touched the lives of everyone she met with her joyful spirit and beautiful smile. I extend my condolences to my family Darin and Mom (Edna), the Buers, Atkinson’s, and the Sanders as well as my extended families at the Berwick and Marker Lutheran Churches. May God Bless you and give you his comfort and peace knowing Marie sits with our Heavenly Father and she has united with those family member who have gone before her.

We wish to extend our sympathy to Marie's family and many friends.
She was always smiling and happy when we visited and was truly an inspiration to everyone.
Gloria and Joel Saude

All my sympathy to Marie's family. I met Marie when she was a resident at Trinity Homes in Minot. We had nice visits almost everyday that I worked. Marie wasn't able to be up and out much, so I would stop in and visit her. (I worked in the activity department) We continued to remain in contact when she moved to Rugby. I always enjoyed the cards we exchanged at Christmas and birthdays, and how she took time to always write such a nice notes in them. I'm so sorry for your loss, she was a wonderful lady.

My deepest sypmathy in the loss of your beloved Marie. I did not know where to send a card to, so I felt that this would be some way that we could send our thoughts and prayers to your family. She was a very special and such a kind and loving person to everyone that knew her. She is so happy with Orris now, too. Keep her memories very close and she will be with you always. God's blessings and our deepest sympathy. Dennis and Becky Cargo
