Muriel Catherine Opstedal

Muriel Catherine (Tuff) Opstedal, the daughter of Ernest and Edith (DuPre) Tuff  was born May 22, 1922 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  She died at the age of 91 years on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, North Dakota.

Muriel was raised in the home of parents, moving as a young child with her family to North Dakota.  She attended grade school at Hendrickson #4 in Walsh Township, Pierce Count and graduated Salutatorian from Rugby High School, the class of 1940.  Muriel was united in marriage to Lloyd Opstedal of Rolette in the parsonage of the Rolla Lutheran Church on November 2, 1940, taking a short break from her nursing studies at the Trinity Nursing School in Minot.  To this union a son, Daryl was born on November 11, 1942.  The couple purchased a farm in Finnegan Township, Rolette County in 1943 where they farmed and made their home for over 44 years.  Muriel returned to college at the North Dakota State College of Science where she completed her nursing degree and was licensed to practice.  A loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Muriel worked several years outside the home at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Rugby.  The couple retired and moved to Rugby in 1987.  Muriel enjoyed baking, playing cards, traveling, dancing and listening to music, especially when her son played the accordion, spending time with friends and caring for her family.  She was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church and its WELCA in Rugby and the Women of the Moose in Minot.  Lloyd died April 16, 2013.

Survivors include five grandchildren, Darren (Barb), Jeff (Vicki) and Brion Opstedal, all of Rolette, Dale Opstedal of Minot and Melissa (David “DJ”) Anderson of Rugby; nine great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Vivian “Bing” Shuley of Pullman, Washington; one brother, Dennis (Lore) Tuff of Rugby; brother-in-law, Ralph Berg and sisters-in-law, Stella Lunde and Lois Tuff, all of Rugby; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her husband; son Daryl; one brother, Les Tuff; brother-in-law, Al Shuley; and her parents.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 16th at the First Lutheran Church in Rugby with late spring burial in the Persilla Watts Cemetery, Rugby.  Pastors Mike Pretzer and Sharon Baker, officiating

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer services and sharing of memories at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby.  Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church.
