Ronald Casmer Volk

Ronald Casmer Volk was born on October 27, 1946 in Rugby, North Dakota to Casmer and Betty (Heintz) Volk and was the second of 8 children.  He died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 2, 2016 at his home in Berwick, North Dakota.

Ron was raised in the home of his parents in Fulda, North Dakota. He was united in marriage to Shirley Volk on August 30, 1965.  Soon after their marriage, he packed his newly wed wife, two sons, belongings, and moved to Illinois at the age of 19.  He worked as a paint line technician at Case IH for 35 years in East Moline, IL until his well-deserved retirement in 2002.  He was a proud member of UAW 1304.  He was also a life-long farm hand and worked for many farmers over the years.  For the past two years, he enjoyed working for Wayne, Myrna, Ryan and Ann Latendresse on their family farm.  Ron and Shirley raised their four children, Ronald Ray, Randy Allen, Patricia Ann and Christopher Ronald in Orion, Illinois where they resided for almost 50 years.  Ron was a good father and loved his grandchildren dearly.  When he wasn’t helping on a farm he was tearing up the greens on the golf course.  He loved to brag about his hole-in-one at hole number 3, but was most proud of his double eagle shot on hole number 13 at Valley View Country Club in Cambridge where he was a member for many years.  Both were shot in 2006.  Ron was a longtime member of the Lions Club and former president of the local chapter in Orion.  He was also a member of White Tail Unlimited and the N.R.A. and enjoyed many years of hunting with his two sons, son-in-law, Brad, all his brothers, brothers-in-law and his father.  He finally shot ‘the big one’ three years ago.  He was an avid sports fan and cheered for the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Bulls and watched NASCAR.  He will continue to cheer on his Cubs to ‘win it all’ this year!  Ron was a most fierce Euchre card player and one of the best 12” softball pitchers in all of Illinois.  He proudly walked his daughter down the aisle a few years ago and welcomed in two daughters-in-law like they were his own.

In 2015, Ron packed his still young bride of 50 years, their belongings and moved back to his roots in North Dakota.  They greatly enjoyed being snowbirds with his brother, Bryon and his wife Pat in Sun City West, Arizona for the past four years.  There, he continued to play golf ‘only six days a week’, cards ‘only once in a while’ and entertained visitors, especially his brothers and sisters, whom he loved with all his heart.  Ron never knew a stranger and welcomed all with his warm smile and infectious laugh.  He was a faithful Catholic and ushered at church for decades.  He and Shirley celebrated their 51st anniversary this past August.

Ron is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Ronald (Lisa) of Geneva, IL, Randy (Karla) of Galesburg, IL, Patricia (Brad) Sterling of New Windsor, IL and Christopher Volk of Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren, Bronson Volk, Aaron, Jacob and Savannah Volk and Jay Sterling; siblings, Duaine (Phyllis) Volk of Ellenburg, WA, Sharon Burckhard of West Fargo, Shiela (Bruce) Heilman of Gardner, Byron (Pat) Volk of Fargo, Mark (Sue) Volk of Fargo, Gloria Frost of Valley City and Joseph (Mel) Volk of Harvey; numerous nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Richard Burckhard; and his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 6th at the St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner with burial in the church cemetery at a later date.  Father Michael Schommer, Celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Towner with a Rosary and vigil prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Tuesday.
